Stepping into Spring!

Hey there everyone, and welcome to my blog.

Here I will be sharing thoughts, inspiration, tips and tricks and quite possibly sleep-deprived musings when I’ve been at the workbench longer than I’d planned (this happens rather more frequently than is probably healthy for me but Eh! When the muse strikes, right?)

While I was sitting here and thinking about creating this blog, I realised I wanted it to reflect several things I’m passionate about.

Sustainability, Slow Craft Jewellery making, physical and mental health, this magical and ancient land we’re living on here in Australia, supporting my students and clients - and building a strong and supportive family amongst all of you, my wonderful fellow creatives!

So- each month I will be posting a blog that I’ll tie into the seasons, and one of our native plants that is associated with the month. I’ll talk about inspiration, mindful crafting, setting intentions and turning your slow crafting passion into a source of joy for the coming month.

Right! Let’s dive into September – and the official start to Spring here Down Under 😉

Igniting Creativity — Celebrate Passion & Expression with the Illawarra Flame Tree

As spring blossoms reach their fullest, the Illawarra Flame Tree bursts into fiery colour—bright oranges and reds that evoke energy, passion, and possibility. The vivid, flame-like blossoms symbolise vitality, inspiration, and the power of expression. Like this iconic native flower, your creative energy can spark new ideas, new projects, and bold innovations. It reminds us that embracing passion and enthusiasm can lead to beautiful, transformative growth.

This month is a perfect time to harness that fiery spirit and ignite your own creative flame through slow, mindful jewellery making. Use vibrant colours—fiery reds, bright oranges, and energetic textures—to craft jewellery that reflects your boldest ideas. Slow craft allows you to connect deeply with your inspiration, creating with intention rather than haste, turning your passion into meaningful art.

Mindful Crafting for Inspiration & Courage
Before you start, take a moment. Breathe deeply, visualise your creative purpose, and set an intention to be honest in your craft. Approach your work as a celebration of your unique perspective.

  • Incorporate dynamic designs: layered textures, asymmetrical shapes, or bold techniques that symbolise your unique voice. You can use a rolling mill to emboss in a texture, or etching, or simply different hammers to work in the texture. If you’re feeling particularly spicy, take your metal outside and find an interesting rock to lay it on, then hammer away with your rawhide mallet to transfer the texture to the metal.
Think about the gemstones you might incorporate and challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone with bold irregular shapes, and alternate gems such as the rich orange and gold garnets (Spessartine and Hessonite) Citrines - both the normal colour range as well as the deeper Madeira Citrines, the Whiskey Quartz’s and even into the gorgeous yellow and orange sapphires! Don’t forget the softer, warmer tones of amber as well as the earthy, warm toned agates and jaspers.
  • Approach each step intentionally - solder with patience, choose your materials deliberately, and trust in your attention to detail. As the days warm, your metal will reach soldering (and melting!) temps faster than in winter. Watch your metal colour carefully so you don’t overheat until you get used to the warmer days.
  • Infuse your jewellery with images and patterns that mean creativity to you - perhaps a flame motif, a bright gemstone, or a bold, out-there statement piece. Find a theme that resonates with you, and explore designing a mini collection of a matching pendant, ring and earrings perhaps, that helps you capture the burst of new energy you get with the turning of the season.

Eco-Conscious & Passionate Action
Choose vibrant, sustainable materials. Use ethically sourced, recycled materials - think ethically mined gemstones and gemstone beads as well as choosing a metal supplier that works with recycled materials if you haven’t the set up to recycle your own. By doing this, you show respect for both your craft and the planet.

Create Jewellery That Simply Makes You Happy!
Design pieces that embody your passion. Let each piece remind you to make time to create pieces that excite you and never be afraid to express your true self through your jewellery unapologetically.

Your Turn!
This spring, harness your passion and let your creativity run wild. Share your fiery, inspiring designs with #SpringFire and let’s celebrate the power of expression and bold beginnings together. Here’s to igniting your creative flame and shining brightly into this season of renewal.

Speak to you again soon,

❤️ Storm
